Non-Conventional Energy Sources

The energy comes from natural sources, which are also known as unconventional energy sources or renewable energy sources. In addition, tidal energy, wind energy, and solar energy are among the sources. Additionally, these energy sources are fully utilized for a considerable amount of time. Solar energy, which is accessible, and free sources of energy, which have often been used since ancient times, are among the several non-conventional sources. Therefore, the estimated amount of solar energy is comparable to almost 15,000 times the amount of energy used annually. However, wind energy is frequently employed to generate electricity, and the kinetic energy of the wind is further transformed into electrical energy.

Which are the natural energy sources

Natural sources of energy are resources that are found naturally and are held in distant, dead biological components under the Earth.

There are two sorts of natural energy sources:

1. conventional energy sources

2. unconventional energy sources

Conventional energy sources

The term “conventional sources of energy” refers to energy sources that are naturally located on or beneath the Earth and require a long time to develop or replenish. These energy sources are typically non-renewable as well. Commercial and non-commercial energy sources make up the second division of the traditional energy sources.

The cost of consumption is influenced by a number of variables, including supply and demand, accessibility, feasibility, etc. Examples include

(a) Electricity: The most prevalent and necessary source of energy that we utilise on a daily basis. It powers several residential appliances, including refrigerators, lights, washers, and dryers, as well as those found in offices and manufacturing facilities. In power plants including nuclear power plants, hydroelectric power plants, and thermal power plants, electricity is generated using a variety of commercial energy sources.

(b) Coal is a sort of fossil fuel that is found below the Earth’s surface and was created by the decomposition of organic materials as a result of the intense compression and temperature caused by the layers of the Earth. The coal we consume takes millions of years to create. As a result, it is not a renewable energy source.

(c) Natural gas and oil: These are similarly produced from fossil fuels; they are found underneath the Earth’s surface and were created from organic materials that had disintegrated. The layers of the Earth are highly compressed and extremely hot, which is why they are in this shape. Natural gas and oil are also classified as non-renewable energy sources since they need a very long time to generate yet may be consumed immediately.

Non-convention sources

Energy sources that are continuously replenished by natural processes are referred to as non-conventional sources of energy, or renewable sources of energy. Non-traditional energy sources may be produced at a steady rate for repeated use and do not soon run out.

“Non-conventional resources” include geothermal energy, wind, solar, nuclear, biomass, and other types of natural resources. We can utilise them to produce clean energy with little waste since they are pollution-free.

These energy sources are additionally less costly and do not harm the environment or the neighbouring areas. As they may be manufactured or created naturally at a pace greater than or equal to the rate at which they are utilised, they are sometimes referred to as renewable energy sources.

Solar energy is captured by directly transforming solar energy in solar power plants into electrical energy. This solar energy conversion mechanism is carried out by photosynthesis. Green plants take in solar energy and transform it into chemical energy during photosynthesis. Although solar energy is one of the most important non-conventional sources of energy, it is used extremely infrequently. It is the most significant non-conventional source of energy, produces output that is environmentally beneficial and non-polluting, and is widely accessible.

  • wind power

The mechanism through which wind is utilised to produce power is known as wind energy. Power output rises with increasing wind up to the maximum output of the specific turbine. Wind farms choose locations with stronger, more consistent winds. These are often found at elevations above sea level. Wind is used by wind turbines to produce power. Since no fossil fuels are burned to produce power, there is no pollution.

  • Tidal power

Tidal power is a type of hydropower that produces electricity by utilising the energy of tides. We can produce electricity using tidal power in areas where the sea experiences waves and tides. India may implement “ocean thermal level conversion,” which will enable it to produce 50,000mW of electricity in order to meet the demand for power.

  • Geothermal power

The heat energy we obtain from hot rocks found in the crust of the planet is known as geothermal energy. Therefore, greenhouse gases held in the ground are released by geothermal wells, although these emissions are far lower per energy unit than those from fossil fuels. Since this energy saves 80% on fossil fuels, it often has cheap operating expenses. The utilization of geothermal energy has increased as a result. It does not produce pollutants and aids in mitigating global warming.

Advantages of non-conventional energy

(1) There is a huge field of research in the non-conventional energy source sectors on its future and its usage in science and other applications.

(2) Non-conventional energy, also referred to as renewable energy, is a naturally occurring source that, even in the most remote areas, has a significant economic impact on local and regional sectors. This is because non-conventional energy is readily available for a very long time, and once power generation facilities are put in place, it can generate useful work for a very long time with little effort.

(3) Renewable energy has a low energy density and contributes to environmental sustainability and pollution reduction. As a result, there is reduced chance of an accident.

(4) The low fuel costs of non-conventional energy-based power plants make them significantly more accessible to consumers and companies.


Demand for non-conventional sources is growing, since fossil fuels are one of the major contributors of global pollution. These sources lessen reliance on oil and gas while simultaneously causing greenhouse consequences. Therefore, scientists are working on ways for us to access numerous non-conventional sources of energy, which are not only renewable but also non-polluting, in order to fulfil the energy, need of the growing population.
